Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an grave risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
