Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans immediately called for increased transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
However, some rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the men shown in photographs have their identities blacked out.
But some are not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to pass a bill mandating the files' release.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were given physical binders of materials that contained little previously unseen data.
