A Number of Affected as In-Flight Disturbance Impacts Delta Flight Arriving in Sydney

Delta Airlines reported the plane encountered "momentary turbulence" as it touched down at Sydney Airport.

Multiple passengers and crew have been injured when a Delta Airlines jet from LA to Sydney, Australia was hit by significant turbulence Friday morning.

The flight, numbered 41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it touched down at the Sydney airport, a company official stated. Four flight attendants sustained injuries.

Local paramedics said they assessed five individuals, and transported a trio to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that such as spinal discomfort and migraines. Those affected ranged from their thirties and seventies.

The event represents the latest incident of commercial jets experiencing severe turbulence, with experts pointing out that global warming is a significant contributor.

There were 245 passengers and a crew of 15 on the Airbus A350, the Delta spokesperson added, clarifying that the plane touched down "safely" at Sydney Airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on Friday.

Emergency responders said they received a call just three minutes prior to the plane arrived, and ambulances were ready and waiting at the airport.

The reasons turbulence is growing more common - and more severe.

Last year, two dozen individuals were hurt when a Delta Airlines flight, travelling from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, experienced "severe" rough air just two hours into the lengthy trip, and had to make an unscheduled landing.

Recently, travelers and staff on a certain international flight endured a terrifying short but intense of severe turbulence. A traveler died and many were hurt, as unbelted passengers rose out of their seats and fell back down.

Turbulence is fairly routine while flying, and while instances of strong or severe turbulence seem to be rising, they are statistically infrequent.

Research indicates that there are approximately five thousand cases of severe-or-greater turbulence each year, out of a sum of in excess of 35 million flights that now take off globally.

Severe turbulence is described as when the up and down movements of a jet experiencing disturbed air exert more than a significant G-force on your body - sufficient force to propel you from your seat if you did not have on a seatbelt.

As a changing climate alters atmospheric conditions, researchers alert that flying could become more turbulent: warming trends and altered air currents in the higher altitudes are likely to increase the regularity and severity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
